Post-purchase upsell

Learn how to use the Post-Purchase Upsell feature of the AOV Post Purchase Upsell app to boost your sales and maximize AOV in this step-by-step guide.

What is Post-purchase upsell?

The Post-Purchase Upsell feature allows you to recommend complementary products to customers after they complete their checkout. It’s an effective way to encourage additional purchases and boost your store’s Average Order Value (AOV).

Why Post-purchase upsell?

Optimize "last-minute" purchase window

Post-purchase upselling utilizes last-minute purchase window where customers already have the momentum of a completed transaction, thereby suggesting products customers didn’t think to buy initially.

Tap into emotional buying

At checkout, customers are already in a buying mindset. Optimizing this psychological state, Post-purchase upsell creates time-sensitive deals that they can't resist.

Enhance customer shopping experience

You can offer useful product recommendations, such as suggesting specific products, applying percentage or fixed amount discounts for their purchases, etc to make the shopping more valued and engaging.

How to set up Post-purchase upsell offer?

Step 1: Select Post-purchase upsell

Navigate Offers in the Menu > Choose Create new offer > Click Select on Post-purchase upsell card.

If this is your first time using the feature, you’ll need to embed the app into your post-purchase page. Follow the instructions provided in the yellow banner.

Step 2: Define your Offer information

Offer name

Enter a name for your campaign so that you can easily identify it later on. You customers won't see this name on the storefront.

Step 3: Add Trigger conditions

Set the trigger condition so that your post-purchase offers can be shown.

Condition 1

Criteria

You can define the criteria that determine when the offer will appear. There are three main available criteria: Product, Order and Customer.

Specific product: Use this condition to display the upsell offer to customers who purchased a particular product.

  • Click the button Add product and select one(s).

Specific collection: Target customers who purchase any product within a specific collection.

  • Click the button Add collection and select one(s).

Total order value: Use this condition to trigger the upsell based on the total value of the customer's cart.

  • Comparison Operator: Choose from Greater or Less

  • Value: Enter the threshold value (e.g., 100 for $100).

Specific customer segment: Use this condition to target customers who belong to predefined segments

  • Click Add segment to choose or define customer group(s).

Condition 2 and Condition 3 (Optional)

You can add a maximum of 3 conditions by clicking the button Add 'AND' condition. In the condition 2 and 3, you can combine more criteria which customers have to reach in order to get the deals.

Step 4: Add your Upsell offer

Under the Upsell Offer section, select the type of offer to display as part of the upsell.

  • AI Recommendation: Let the app suggest the best upsell product based on customer data.

  • Specific Product: Manually select a product to offer.

  • Specific Collection: Choose a collection to display as the upsell offer.

Then, choose whether the type of discount is percentage or fixed amount, then decide the expected value.

Choose complementary products or bestsellers for maximum impact.

Step 5: Customize Widget Content

Offer title

Add an engaging title and description to catch your customers' attention, such as: “Hold on! You’re about to miss a fantastic deal from us.”

Show countdown timer

If you want to create more urgency for the deals and prompt quick decisions, you can enable the button Show countdown timer and set the time limit. Hereby, you can customize:

  • Countdown title (e.g., LIMITED TIME OFFER! EXPIRES IN)

  • Offer will expire after checkout in: Set the duration for the offer (e.g., 15 minutes)

Final step:

Preview the widget on desktop and mobile to ensure it looks appealing. Click Save and ensure the offer is active.
